McNabb:Say what you mean... mean what you say

When the Eagles found success with a journeyman named Garcia, it didn't take a genius for the fans, media, and analysts to talk about QB Controversy between the injured McNabb and the emotion-driven leader Garcia. But the Philadelphia Eagles made it very clear, McNabb is our man and Garcia was released and quickly picked up by Tampa in early March, 2007.

So that should have been the end of it... and then their was the draft.

In the second round of the draft, the Eagles "shocked" some with the selection of Kevin Kolb, a QB from Houston. Kolb was a solid pick-up, despite the arguments that their existed better picks than Kolb in the 2nd round. But regardless, his career shows he is a very deserving player. For example, Kolb accounted for over 400 yards passing and 100 yards rushing against TCU in his frosh season, only the fourth time this feat has been achieved in Division IA. Kolb finished the season with 3,131 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions en route to a 7-6 record on the year. After a losing season in 2004, Kolb led the Cougars to a 6-5 regular-season record in 2005. He named the Cougars' MVP in the Fort Worth Bowl despite a 42-13 loss to Kansas. But Kolb's signature college year was 2006, throwing for 30 touchdowns against only 4 interceptions on the way to a 10-4 record and a Conference USA championship. Kolb won the conference's offensive MVP but lost to South Carolina 44-36 in the Liberty Bowl.

Deserving of a high pick? Yes. Does McNabb agree?

“It was shocking,” McNabb said Tuesday in an interview on WIP-AM radio.“When you draft somebody at the position you’re in, of course you have questions of ’What does that mean?”’ McNabb said. “The most important thing for me is to make sure I’m healthy and 100 percent and get back out there competing and do the right thing on the field.”

How could the Eagles have done that to him? Oh please, don't do that to Donovan, he still has something left? Who could have possibly believe that the Eagles needed a QB? Who was nuts enough to advocate for the selection of a quarterback in the draft?

Well...Donovan McNabb said so. Confused? I sure am.

Donovan McNabb said he was confused about the Eagles taking a QB in the draft, but when he was on the "Herd" a few weeks before the draft, he advocated the team drafting a QB. When the question, "What do the Eagles need to gain in the upcoming draft?" He replied with, "Outside linebackers, strengthen the front four of the Defensive line, and some more receiving threats... and a quarterback." "Really?" replied a shocked ESPN reporter...

Really.

So, tell me now why it's a big deal for the Eagles to have taken a very good quarterback instead of a Wide Receiver, or Defensive lineman, or Outside linebacker? Let's face it Dono, you are over 30 and coming off a serious knee injury. Count them, that's two seasons of injuries. Two seasons of playing that isn't living up to your 2004 performance. Beyond that, you have been unable to bring your team to the next level with poor performances in several NFC Championship games, and a dismal performance in the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots. So, when they recognized the need for a quarterback in the draft, and determined your injury to be dangerous to the success of this depleted squad, your team went out and got an insurance policy. You are good, but not immortal.

Now, if Donovan is healthy, which I hope he will be don't get me wrong, Kolb will not even challenge for the starting Quarterback position in Philly for at least 4 seasons. By that time it will be a decision if the Eagles want to continue the McNabb era by renewing his contract or let him go and give the reigns to Kolb who should be ready to lead by then.

But the issue remains, why would you come out the media and help fuel the fire behind the selection of Kolb. Donovan, you may say all the right things, but you proved that it's just talk. If you are going to come out and say things like, 'We need to look at adding depth to the quarterback position', not to mention you are a team leader and an intelligent human being, don't be shocked when they actually follow your recommendation. Even if the pick wasn't because you said it weeks earlier, you agreed that their was a need for depth at your position. Don't act humble, if you are not going to live up to its consequences. You only look foolish.

As for Kolb, Donovan said “I think Kevin Kolb is going to do an excellent job for us... I’m going to try and help him as much as I can. I’m sure he’s going to do great. I look forward to working with him this weekend.” I hope that was what he meant to say, could get ugly if hit isnt.

Besides, if Kolb comes in and takes the position, it's because he is better than you. Isn't that who McNabb, the team player, wants playing? Don't ask Donovan, he may 'shock' you...

Welcome!

Welcome to 2 MINUTEs (of) WARNING!

First off, allow me to introduce myself. You will know me as Adam Michaels, a former college football player and current assistant college coach. Further, I am and have been a writer. I have been working on a fictional novel, a fact based novella, and have just taken on "2 MINUTEs (of) WARNING!" the newest web log on Football at all levels.

This blog's purpose is 3 fold:
1. Much of what will be discussed here is based on the social, media-related, or public opinion of NFL, College, European or Arena football leagues and players. The juicy stuff! The stuff that ESPN has to discuss without offending anyone; I intend on offending them if its warranted.

2. Every Monday, you can navigate your way in to see the latest post on "Coaches to Hold Up! Coaches to Hang Up!" which will discuss the best and worst calls of coaches around the NFL from their games on Sundays.

3. Draft Reviews, Transactions, which will involve summaries of the best and worst draft selections, as well as any hot topics that come out of the draft...we will get to Randy Moss and New England, VERY soon...trust me.

So as we get started on the upcoming 2007-2008 football seasons, make sure you check in here and voice your opinions; whether you agree or disagree... I'm always looking for a good argument on football!
